The water
Fine white sand, shallow depths and almost no swell: the northern shore of the gulf is sheltered from every prevailing wind but the easterly.
The estate
Cala Rossa is also a private residential estate. The genuinely public strip of beach is narrow — most of the shoreline is taken up by properties and private beaches.
Public access
The simplest way in is via the neighbouring beach of Tramulimacchia, where parking is free. That is the advice locals give.
The hotel
The Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa, five stars, has been a Relais & Châteaux member since 1993. Its restaurant and spa can be booked without staying there.

What the photographs leave out
Many sites present Cala Rossa as an ordinary public beach. It is not: the shoreline is largely private and the free stretch is short. That takes nothing away from the water, but it saves an unpleasant surprise.
Park at Tramulimacchia
The neighbouring beach offers free parking and the same body of water. That is where to walk in from, rather than hunting for a space that does not exist.
Early morning
On water without a wave, morning light is the best thing the bay has to offer. And there is still somewhere to park.
Saint-Cyprien
Larger, easier to reach, with a wild stretch to the north. Ten minutes.
Pinarellu
A long sweep backed by pines, twenty minutes north.
Palombaggia
Red rock and umbrella pines, twenty minutes south of Porto-Vecchio.

Where is Cala Rossa?
On the northern shore of the gulf of Porto-Vecchio, within the commune of Lecci (20137), southern Corsica. From Villa Terra, allow about ten minutes by car.
Is Cala Rossa beach public?
Only in part, and this is the important point. Cala Rossa is also a private estate: the strip genuinely open to the public is narrow, most of the shoreline being taken up by properties and private beaches. Travel sites often leave this out.
How do you get to Cala Rossa and where do you park?
The simplest way is via the neighbouring beach of Tramulimacchia, which offers free parking and gives onto the same body of water. Looking for a space inside the estate itself is generally a waste of time.
Is Cala Rossa suitable for children?
Yes, for the quality of the water: fine sand, shallow depths and very little swell, the northern shore of the gulf being sheltered. The caveat concerns access and available space, not swimming.
Can you visit the Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa without staying there?
The hotel, five stars and a Relais & Châteaux member since 1993, has a restaurant and a spa that can be booked independently of a stay. Villa Terra's concierge can arrange it.
Cala Rossa or Saint-Cyprien?
Cala Rossa for flatter water and gentler bathing, provided you accept the constrained access. Saint-Cyprien for space, length of beach and the option of walking north into solitude. Both are in the commune of Lecci and ten minutes from the villa.
